WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?
What is Osteopathy?: About Us
Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy that began in Kirksville, Missouri USA by a surgeon and physician named Andrew Taylor Still in the 1800s. It is considered a natural therapy, that can also be complemented by western medical interventions. Osteopathy is renowned for its holistic approach, this means that your osteopath considers all aspects of your wellbeing and how these may contribute to the presentation.

Our Philosophy
The key principles comprising the philosophy of Osteopathy:

The body is a unit:
The body is comprised of the mind, the body and the spirit.

The body has self regulating mechanisms:
A.T Still believed that the body had all the necessary tools and functions to maintain itself in the face of stresses caused by our environment.

Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated:
In other words, function can affect structure and structure can affect function.

Rational treatment is based on the first three principles:
The osteopath examines, diagnoses and treats based upon the above principles.

What we do
Osteopathic treatment is non-invasive, gentle and safe. Our range of techniques are hands on and expansive, including direct techniques like articulation of the joints and tissues or indirect techniques to decrease tension. This makes osteopathy an ideal modality for the treatment of newborns and the elderly.

To be qualified to practice osteopathy in Australia you need to be registered with AHPRA and have completed a university level Bachelors degree. This means that osteopaths are taught using current evidence-based models, thereby making it safe to treat people suffering many different complaints. You do not need a referral to see an Osteopath as we are primary health practitioners.
